Protests erupt outside Kasba Police station as 3 arrested in alleged Kolkata college gang rape
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday launched a fierce attack on West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, accusing her of deliberately ignoring the Hindu victims of the Murshidabad violence. BJP leaders alleged that Banerjee’s actions reflected a deep-seated "hatred for Hindus."
Speaking at a press conference in New Delhi, BJP national spokesperson Sambit Patra accused Mamata Banerjee of religious bias. Responding to questions about her absence from the violence-hit areas, Patra said, "She hates Hindus. Had similar atrocities happened against Muslim brothers, she would have agitated and camped there."
The BJP also took aim at the Communist Party of India (Marxist), alleging that the CPI(M) distanced itself from the victims, who were reportedly its own workers, because they were Hindus. "Those who were killed were Communist Party workers. Neither CPI(M) nor Mamata Banerjee owns them because their names are Hargobind and Chandan," said Patra.
Violence had broken out in Murshidabad, a Muslim-majority district, on April 11 during protests against the Waqf (Amendment) Act. The clashes resulted in two deaths, injuries to several others, and extensive property damage. Thousands fled their homes amid the chaos.
Meanwhile, West Bengal BJP President Sukanta Majumdar visited Murshidabad to meet the affected families. After the visit, Majumdar alleged that Mamata Banerjee was pressurising authorities to send victims back despite their homes being destroyed. He stated that if the Kolkata High Court allows an NIA investigation, the state government would be bound to follow the court's order.
As tensions continue, the BJP has intensified its narrative, accusing both the TMC and the Left parties of practicing selective outrage based on religion and political expediency.
